Brno, Sep 21 (BD) – Noise limits imposed by courts have deprived local citizens of various events at the previous cultural and political hub – Náměstí Svobody. The city does not give up – constitutional complaint against the ban is about to be submitted to the Constitutional Court.
Last year, courts decided on the noise limits for the Náměstí Svobody square. 50 decibels is the allowed noise limit, but after 10 PM, the threshold gets even lower. Courts acted upon the request of a husband and wife living in the area.
Many concerts, events, and political meetings were therefore moved to other places or had to discard speakers.
According to Czech news server Aktuálně.cz, only certain events have been allowed as in compliance with the Municipal and the Regional Court’s decision since 2016.
The reasonable amount of noise?
“Let the square be vivid, yet in a reasonable amount,” Jiří Novák, the discontent local resident suggests. “Municipality is caught between a rock and a hard place. We and also event organizers keep complaining,” Novák admits for Czech on-line daily iDnes.cz.
Deputy Mayor Richard Mrázek expresses opposing attitude: “We do not agree, the square is not only for those who live there, but it should also serve the inhabitants of the city and its visitors.”
Mrázek also pinpoints for Aktuálně.cz that although, it is crucial to comply with quiet hours, Náměstí svobody is a major square in Brno and therefore in service for all people.
This entangled situation has been a problem for more than a year. In a week, the issue will be passed to the Constitutional Court. Brno will now await the Court’s response and will handle the apple of content accordingly.
