Brno, Feb 22 (BD) – Brno city councilors recommended a “by the river” option (‘Ac’ variant) of the railway station this Tuesday (Feb. 20, 2018). At the same time, they consider the “Petrov” alternative (‘B1b’) acceptable.
Brno’s municipal government (Zastupitelstvo města Brna) will put the matter to vote on February 27. The recommendations of the regional representatives and the City Council will then be submitted to the Ministry of Transport, which will have the final say.
“I personally believe that it is better for Brno, and less risky, to build a new railway station by the river. The station in this location represents a more advantageous option, which would mean the better development of the city, especially its center,” Mayor of Brno Petr Vokřál commented on the council’s recommendation in the official press release.

Brno has introduced three main alternatives for the future of its central station. A so-called “null alternative” (no project) supports the station at its current location; the alternative “under Petrov” (in variations named ‘B1’, ‘B1a’, ‘B1b’, ‘B1c’, ‘B1d’, and ‘B1f’) depicts a new railway station slightly shifted from the current direction to the “Malá Amerika” warehouses; and finally the “by the river” alternative (variations ‘A’, ‘Aa’, ‘Ab’, and ‘Ac’) features a transport hub located south of the city centre.

“The ‘Ac’ alternative represents the combination of the connections between Chrlice, Břeclav, and Střelice; the connection of the line from Chrlice to the underground station under the railway station […],” reads the official project website describing the alternative supported by Brno city councilors.

Representatives of the South Moravian Region voted on the future location of the city’s main transport hub earlier this year and decided to recommend the “by the river” alternative to the Czech government, as reported earlier by Brno Daily here: South Moravian representatives voted for the new location of the Brno Central Railway Station.
According to a recent poll of nearly 1,000 people by Focus (read A new poll in Brno to find out where the citizens want the central station), most citizens of Brno are for the upgrade of the central railway station under Petrov Hill.
For 64 percent of people, the Petrov option is acceptable, and the relocated train station is acceptable for 49 percent of respondents. The current location is acceptable for 58 percent of people.
“With regards to the preferred location of the main railway station, the existing location is supported by 35% of the population, the ‘Petrov’ option by 31%, and the ‘by the river’ alternative by 24%,” the official website of the Brno Architect Office (KAM) reports.
