Brno, Mar 20 (BD) – Last Friday, representatives of the City of Brno and the South Moravian Region agreed to carry out a study to examine the alternatives in building an underground railway line in Brno from Šumavská Street to the train station in Královo Pole.

The Brno underground line would be used for light regional trains powered by electricity on a two-track line that would be similar to the Prague subway.

“Today we have initiated the first meeting to hasten the steps towards the preparation of a feasibility study of the north-south track diameter. It is necessary to specify what should be included in the study goals, and, in particular, to define precisely the route of this regional railway line,” Martin Maleček, Deputy Governor of the South Moravian Region explained in the official press release.

“The north-south track diameter should run from the southeast of Brno, from Chrlice, and continue below the city center further to the north. To Šumavská Station the route is clear; the question is now how far it will run to the north,” Czech local daily Brněnská drbna quoted Czech News Agency (ČTK).

Currently, two alternatives are being considered. In the first alternative, the line would run via Technologický Park and in Řečkovice would connect with the railway in the direction of Tišnov. In the second, shorter alternative, the line would run from Šumavská via Kartouzská to the Královo Pole station, Brněnská drbna further described.

The underground tram and railway line is a necessary condition for the future construction of the new Brno railway station in the proposed location by the river. A new underground line would address the capacity problems of surface transport connecting the new central railway station with the city center.
