Brno, Mar 30 (BD) – The results of the architectural competition for the future design of the Creative Center in the former prison between the streets of Bratislava and Cejl were approved on Tuesday by Brno City Council. The jury chose the best out of seven submitted proposals.
The Creative Center will have a number of functions: startup incubator for businesses in creative industries, rehearsal studios, ateliers for rent, and workshops. “Building a Creative Center is a key infrastructure initiative to support creative industries and, in particular, help to activate specific adjacent neighbourhoods,” the City of Brno writes on its official website.
The winning project was prepared by the architects from Prague’s KAVA Studio. On the basis of their proposal, the project documentation will now be developed and a request for European subsidies will be prepared.
The former regional prison on Cejl is a building with a history dating back to the end of the 18th century. During the 20th century, there were executions of political opponents of Nazism and Communism.
“I appreciate the fact that the winning design regards this as a solemn place […] so that everyone realizes the suffering that happened here,” Brno Mayor Petr Vokřál commented on the results of the competition in the official press release.
Events and tours at the prison are currently organized by the Brno Tourist Information Center. For example, the building will be open for Brno Museum Night on May 19, 2018.
Construction work is planned for 2020-2022, according to the official press release.
