The construction of the tram line will allow the area to be even more accessible – as there will be public transportation connections that will go directly from the main train station. There will be two new tram stops: “Nová Jihlavská” which will be underground, and “Nemocnice Bohunice”. Photo: Visualisations of the new tram stop. Photo credit: MMB.
Brno, Jul 2 (BD) – “It is one of the most important transport structures in the city, not only in terms of the volume of the contract and the subsidies received but also the benefit for the inhabitants of Brno. Supporting public transport in Brno is crucial for us, ” said Mayor Markéta Vaňková.
Last week, Brno’s Mayor Markéta Vaňková, along with representatives of the Brno Public Transport Company (DPMB) and representatives of contractors signed a work contract regarding the tram line construction.
The construction, which is estimated to exceed CZK 1.4 billion, will ensure the accessibility of University Hospital Brno and University Campus Bohunice. From the main train station, passengers can reach the University Campus via tram line 8 in around 15 minutes.
The new tram line will be disconnected from the existing line at the Osová traffic junction, where the possibility of transferring to other bus and trolleybus lines will remain. Work on the nine-hundred-meter long track is scheduled to begin in the autumn and will be completed by the end of 2022. The tram line will have an underground tunnel which is 619 meters long, passing through Mikulášek Square, leading to Netroufalky Street
“Tram transport is the backbone of the public transport system in Brno. I consider the construction a great step forward in terms of passenger comfort and the development of public transport in the city,” said Miloš Havránek, CEO of DPMB.
A few months ago, the City of Brno and DPMB received a subsidy of CZK 1 billion, which will cover 85% of the costs. [Read more in our previous article, “Brno Receives Subsidy for the Construction of a Tram Line from Osová”.]
