Janáček Theater Ensemble Moves under Circus Tent in 2017 – 2018 Season

Brno, June 15 (BD) – A planned reconstruction of Janáček Theater will start soon. The theater will get new facilities and equipment.

“With Brno Municipality, we agreed that in season 2017-2018, when the reconstruction will being carried out, we’ll maintain a full volume of new production,” said Director of National Theater Brno Martin Glaser.

The theater plans to move its program to alternative premises “such as Brno Exhibition Center, where we’ll introduce two new pieces: the opera Faust and ballet West Side Story,” he continues. In Lužánky park, there will be built a circus tent where Vančura’s Capricious Summer will be played in February 2018.

“We’ve been looking at various beautiful spaces in Brno lately, how we could use Špilberk castle and summer scene at the Bishop’s Court,” said theater director. “Reconstruction of facilities Janáček Theater is more than necessary,” he added.

Brno City Council approved the selection of contractors for the reconstruction of Janáček Theater this week. The best offer was the one of an association of MTS, IMOS and OHL for Janáček Theater with a bid price of CZK 524 million excluding VAT.

The deadline for completion of the reconstruction is 14 months. “I believe that we will succeed and in autumn of 2018, the actors and audience will return to the theater,” said Deputy Mayor Richard Mrázek.

The planned reconstruction comprises modernization of sanitary facilities, the interior spectator area, and restaurant. “Theater stage, facilities for employees and stage technology will be completely new. The plan envisages the reconstruction of roof, all fluid mechanics, and parking area,” said Mrázek.
