Pool origins
The modern game of pool is derived from a similar game – croquet. A game played on a lawn where players are hitting wooden balls with a mallet trying to shoot them through the hoops on the floor. The game originates in 15th century in Northern and Central Europe. As croquet is played outdoors, someone had an idea to move it indoors, for more convenience.
Thus, there was a table with green cloth on it to simulate the grass. For some time the game was still played with big mallets, until later some other creative mind discovered that it was more comfortable to hit balls near the rails with the other end of the mallet. The handle was called “queue” (which translates as “tail”), thus the word “cue” is used nowadays.
Where can you find poolrooms in Brno?
There are a few places in Brno where you can enjoy the cue sports. One of them is Utopia Čajovna. They’ve got regular pool, snooker, carambole, chess and darts. One would go there also for great tea, tobacco or a quiet time in the reading room. It is placed at Divadelní 3.
Sport Balkán is another place with lots of indoor sports available, including pool. The complex has 6 bowling lanes, 4 squash courts, places for laser game and hot yoga. There are also a football table, a bar and a darts place. It is located close to the center, at Jugoslávská 5.
Then there is a poolroom named Šilingrák. The club has got 7 pool and 2 carambola tables along with a bar and a big TV for screening sport events. The place is simple, yet refined, suited for people that are looking to play pool with their friends sipping on some beverage. It is situated at Biskupská 283/1.
Billiard Club Yellow Fish just outside of Brno offers carambole, standard pool, and a selection of pizzas on the menu. It is a little out of reach for Brno citizens (5 km from the center), yet there is a cocktail bar and children’s room for your offspring. Find it in Brno–Kohoutovice, at Vaňhalova 2.
