Brno, Sep 11 (BD) – Daily 18 thousand cars are driving down the street, despite the fact the city council is reviewing the plan of turning the street into a pedestrian area in the future.
“Cars will not be allowed, but trams will run normally and residential parking spots will be used as planned”, Vladimír Bielko Head of Transportation department explained to Czech on-line daily iDnes. He also made clear that everything is still under study and experts will come up with more changes and ideas.
Brno Municipality is constantly promoting a calm city center. Veveří street has a potential to become even quieter. Alternative routes through Úvoz or Kounicova street will be suggested by the experts. Kounicova street will get busier by 20 percent.
The adjustments on Veveří will offer more space for bikers, too.
Some residents seem to worry about the impact of the modifications on the boulevard. “It does not make much sense for me,” one of the owners of a store in the area says.
The Deputy Transport Commissioner Hollan explained that permits and documentation for the project will be obtained by the second half of 2018. The project has to be approved by the councilors.
