Brno, Sep 26 (BD) – Currently, 7.88 percent of the population of South Moravian region has been issued an order of distraint. In total, there are 78.522 debtors in the region, findings of Czech Bailiffs Trade Organisation [Exekutorská komora ČR] and Ministry of Justice show.
Distraint is the seizure of someone’s property in order to obtain payment of money owed, especially rent. Once a distraint order has been issued, the bailiff is instructed to seize goods that will be equal to the value of the debt owed. The total amount of debt in South Moravia makes up over 50 billion crowns in 2017.
In 2016, in the Czech Republic, there were issued 4.5 million distraint orders to 834.000 debtors.
Exekutorská komora ČR supports a unique web application “Distraint orders map” that makes it easier to look up the numbers of distraint orders per county, district and municipality.
The map combines statistical data on distraint orders with geographic data and allows to compare them across the Czech Republic. Find the application here [available only in Czech language]: http://mapaexekuci.cz/.
Lenka Zemanová, the Green party [Zelení] secretary for South Moravia says “Our goal is to limit the amount of interest on late payments and total rewards for bailiffs.”
A part of changes proposed by Zelení is one-time forgiveness of debt interests to the state, regions and municipalities, Zemanová informs.
Other Czech political parties, for example, TOP 09, ANO, Piráti, or Communist party, list the problem of distraint in their political programs, too.
