Brno, Oct 2 (BD) – Two years ago, three friends in České Budějovice installed a refrigerator which was accessible to everyone, to avoid people in need searching for food in trash. Unfortunately their “the Public Fridge project”, (“Veřejná lednice”) stopped.
Later, the organizers placed public fridges in Prague, Pilsen, Pelhřimov, Chrudim and Litoměřice and now they want to get it to Brno, Marie Drahoňovská from Czech on-line daily iDnes.cz reported on Saturday.
It looks like a good opportunity for people who can’t afford food and the system is pretty simple: people who are leaving for holidays can put the food that spoils when they leave in the public fridges instead of throwing them out.
The problem is that it is not easy to find someone to be responsible for the public fridge.
The responsibility includes the need to check every day the food that is in the fridge, make sure that it is safe for eating and throw away spoiled or inappropriate food.
There are public refrigerators all over the Europe in countries such as Germany, UK, Ireland, Spain, France and Belgium and it is an excellent way to reduce food waste.
If the project doesn’t work in Brno, the city might find different ways to support people in need.
One of these ways could be a phone application, with a list of restaurants that shows at the end of the end what food they have left and sell it with a reduced price, a thing that is very common in Germany.
