Brno, Oct 23 (BD) – Information rules the world. London or Copenhagen know how to interpret all available data in order to make life better and healthier. Brno looked to them for inspiration and after first processed data in the 2017 State of the City Report, its next “data plans” are spectacular.

All data in one place available for all

Brno plans to improve life quality thanks to open data. It will use not only official statistical and anonymized data from Google or mobile providers but also satellite imageries. Geographic Information System (GIS) portal, the Czech Statistical Office, third-party applications and data from students, research institutions, businesses will be included in the upcoming database.

“We want Brno to be an ambitious city, so we also intend to get data from space, provided by the European Space Agency (ESA) under the Copernicus project,” Jaroslav Kacer, Deputy Mayor of Brno for Smart City explains for Brno.cz (Brno Official Website).

New website with all the data should launch its services in 2018. In the beginning of the year, an interactive 3D box model showing the shape of the city should be available. “The website will have a user-friendly environment that brings joy and satisfaction to all – analysts, programmers and the general public,” Kacer says.

24 hours can turn data into solutions

This October, Brno will join around 200 cities around the world and take part in Climathon. Why? To do “something important for us, our city and our planet”, as organizers on Climathon website inform. It is a 24-hour event where participants will think through headscratchers such as climate change and processing of data for the best of Brno.

“I do not conceal the enthusiasm that the City of Brno has decided to support event such as Climathon competition,” Kacer adds in the official statement

Best ideas will be rewarded with 10 000 CZK in each category and provided further support. Deadline for registration is 10/26. Before 10/15 you can register on their website, after 10/15 it is possible to register following this link.

Climathon takes place on Friday October 27 at Industra @Masná 9, 602 00 Brno. The event lasts for 24 hours.
