Brno, Nov 1 (BD) – Just a few sprinkles and the weed is gone for a long time. But herbicides damage not only unwanted weed, but also health in the city.
The DUHA ecological movement and Ecological Consultation Network named Brno as an example of the cities that do not use or significantly reduce harmful herbicides, Czech daily iDnes.cz writes.
The Public Greenery of the City of Brno (Veřejná zeleň města Brna, VZMB) has been limiting the use of herbicides in its city parks since 2012.
VZMB uses only a few liters of glyphosate on areas of invasive tree species per year. Weed is removed mechanically — by mowing or manually digging and plucking — or using hot water.
For example, in Znojmo the herbicide is sprayed twice a year on all the sidewalks in the city, iDnes.cz reports.
Despite protests from some experts, the European Commission prolonged the possibility of use of glyphosate to the end of 2017.
