Brno, Nov 16 (BD) – Lighting up iconic landmarks, communities and homes across the world purple in honor of individuals and families affected by premature births is a beautiful way to raise awareness this November.
From 5 PM today, until tomorrow at 2 PM Špilberk Castle will be lit up purple.
World Prematurity Day, Nov 17, is a global movement to raise awareness about prematurity highlighting the burden of preterm birth.
This act brings attention to the efforts and concerns of all involved in premature births: medical staff, parents of premature babies, and preterm babies.
This is one of the goals of the Neonatology Department of Faculty Hospital Brno and Brno City Council.
“Our department treats about seven hundred babies born prematurely every year. The medical care is very demanding,” Ivo Borek, head of the Neonatology Department at Faculty Hospital in Brno, wrote in the official statement.
The day was initiated by EFCNI (European Foundation for the Care of Newborn Infants Home) and partnering European parent organisations in 2008.
Approximately 15 million babies worldwide are born preterm each year. Every tenth child is born prematurely.
In the Czech Republic over 9,000 children are born prematurely every year.
In addition to Špilberk in Brno, Dancing House in Prague, the Josef Kajetán Tyl Theater in Pilsen will be lit up purple.
Other iconic landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, Niagara Falls and the Empire State Building will be dressed in purple tonight, too.
