The countdown to Christmas has started. In a little over a month, we’ll be eating Christmas dishes and smooching under the Mistletoe, and the festive mood is already felt everywhere in the streets.
Christmas tree at Náměstí Svobody will be lit for the first time on Friday, Nov. 24, at 5 pm (click here for the official program).
From Nov. 24 to Dec. 23, Brno will be very lively. There will be four main advent markets in the city center at Náměstí Svobody, Dominikánské náměstí, Moravské náměstí, and Zelný trh. In total, 145 cultural events and performances will take place in December there.
Yesterday, the team of Brno Daily went downtown to see how the Christmas preparations are going.
Moravské náměstí – “Advent na Moraváku”
Cold winter evenings and Christmas gift shopping can be made so much better with a mulled wine and festive carols. “Advent na Moraváku” festival will feature an ice rink, live music, food, fireworks, and a craft and charity market.
Every Wednesday, “Moravák” will host dance nights. Find more info on the official website.
An ice rink under the best-known horse of Brno opens in the first week of December.
Náměstí Svobody – the biggest Christmas market
On Christmas, this will be one of the busiest squares in Brno. The preparations are on track! On the most visited Christmas market, you can buy gifts, Christmas ornaments, or craft items.
Every year, thousands of people listen to children singing Christmas carols on the stage and drink mulled wine here.
An 18-meter-tall Christmas tree was set up last Wednesday at náměstí Svobody. The Christmas tree will be lit for the first time on Friday, Nov. 24, with live performances from 4-8.30 pm.

Christmas at Dominikánské náměstí
The Winter Bar, virtual reality, design market, traditional handmade gifts, wooden nativity scene…
Distinctive nativity scenes and traditions have been created around the world, and are displayed during the Christmas time. Christmas market at Dominikánské náměstí in Brno is no exception.
This year, you can admire a nativity scene with a wooden Christmas crib and life-sized animals.
The organizers promise to have a small petting ZOO with sheeps and goats, too!
Zelný Trh – scary start
Those who choose to visit Zelný Trh won’t be disappointed. Visitors can look forward to the wealth of food pop-ups and mulled wine stands. The best part is that it’s open daily right up until Christmas day, so you’ve got plenty of time to pick up some last minute gifts.
Both children and adults, can’t wait for the Krampuslauf (Krampus parade) tomorrow. The countless “devils” will roam the streets at 8-9 pm, after the annual tree lighting ceremony at 6 pm.
The smell of Christmas punch and sound of pleasing melodies of Czech Christmas carols will show you the way to this market. Every day, there will be live performances on the stage.
