Brno, December 28 (BD) – mmcité+ Brno travels to Jindřichův Hradec for a big game tonight and the Brno sports schedule.

Brno Sports Weekly Report

by Bruno Zalubil

Kometa fans have always been amazingly supportive. For two decades the team toiled in the second and even third leagues, yet the rabid fan base still packed the home arena with an average of 5,000 fans a game and travelled around the country to support the team on the road.

Since 2005, when Libor Zábranský came to the rescue by taking control of the team, Kometa has finally been able to deliver some objectively positive results: the team has played well in the Tipsport extraliga and, since earlier this year, they have been the reigning champions.

Last Friday, with a big game in Prague against Sparta, the blue and white clad fans loaded onto the Kometa Express for a collective journey to the capital. The train pulled up right next to DRFG Arena on tracks that many people had probably forgotten even existed. More than 1,100 people got on board, including players, fans, and hundreds of kids from orphanages. The kids wrote to Ježíšek and found presents under a Christmas tree at the Liben train station where everyone got off.

Unfortunately, the festive atmosphere could not add another point in the standings: Kometa lost, 3-2, to Sparta.

Earlier in the week, Brno lost at home by the same score, 2-3, after giving up a tie-breaking goal in the third period to Chomutov.

By Tuesday, though, Kometa was recharged against visiting Dukla. After jumping to a two-goal lead in the first period, they were forced into extra time. Four minutes later, Vojtěch Němec won the game with a penalty shot.

Kometa are sixth in the league stands with 51 points through 32 of 52 games. They play two games on the road this week: tonight at Pardubice at 6 p.m. and Saturday at Vítkovice at 4 p.m.

Then, Kometa will play a game pretty much every two or three days until the Winter Olympic break in February. The regular season ends on March 4.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

mmcité+ Brno Can Turn Around the Season Tonight

Despite their record, mmcité+ Brno has shown moments of brilliance throughout this season. They have players from big name schools who can shoot the lights out, international and Czech players who have a solid all-around game and muscular rebounders who have performed impressive acrobatics under the hoop. Injuries have clearly been a problem. Eventually, it will come around.

Tonight may be the turning point. mmcité+ Brno travels to last-place Basket Fio Banka Jindřichův Hradec tonight. Tip off is 6 p.m.

mmcité+ Brno is 11th in the 12-team Kooperativa NBL with a 3-10 record. Jindřichův Hradec is 0-13

The Brno Sports Report is published every Wednesday. All dates and times are subject to change. Most of the stories are about the traditional “English-speaking” team sports — football, hockey, baseball, basketball, American football, rugby, etc. — but it is also about the interesting local spectator and participation sports — tennis, badminton, running, horse racing, swimming, rock climbing, biking, etc. If you have any suggestions for what should be included, please comment below or send an email to brnosports@gmail.com.
