Brno, Jan 3 (BD) – Kometa have won three games in a row to build momentum for a three-game homestand this week. The defending champions may be getting hot just in time for the final push toward the postseason.
Kometa host Liberec tonight at 6 p.m.; they play league-leading Plzeň on Friday on live television at 6:20 p.m.; and they welcome Olomouc on Sunday at 5 p.m.
The modest streak began at home with an extra-time victory over Dukla, 3-2, on Tuesday. Then, they beat Pardubice, 0-2, with goals by Radek and Hynek Zohorna on Thursday and Vítkovice, 0-1, with a third-period goal by Jan Hruška.
Marek Langhamer appeared in his third Tipsport extraliga game and got his first league shutout at Pardubice. Marek Čiliak played at Vikovice, which is in second in the standings, and got his fourth shutout of the season.
Martin Erat, who assisted Hruška in the Vitkovice victory, has 25 assists this season. Along with his seven goals, Erat leads the team with 32 points.
Kometa moved up to fifth in the league stands with 57 points through 34 of 52 games. Friday-opponent Plzeň tops the league with 75 points.
Kometa will play a game pretty much every two or three days until the Winter Olympic break in February. The regular season ends on March 4.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
mmcité+ Brno wins, hosts Ostrava tonight at 8
After several slow starts hampered his team, mmcité+ Brno head coach Dejan Jakara mixed up his starting lineup and finally got the intensity that he wanted. Brno started strong and established enough momentum to get a 63-87 victory at Basket Fio Banka Jindřichův Hradec on Thursday.
Brno jumped out to a 13-24 lead after the first 10 minutes with excellent shooting, particularly by Canyon Barry (nine points) and Zurab Kereselidze (eight).
Not coincidentally, those players continued putting up points as Brno maintained its lead: Barry finished with 28 and Kereselidze had 17.
“The last couple of games we had a lot of problems with 3-point shots, even when they were open we missed them,” Jakara said. “Now it was different. On the other side we didn’t allow a lot of open shots to a team that has a lot of good shooters.”
For the game, Brno was 22 of 42 from 2-point range and 9 of 15 from 3-point range.
“This was the best game we played in a while,” Barry said. “We executed the coach’s game plan and we shot the ball a lot better. We have a lot of new players so we are still trying to learn how to play with each other.”
mmcité+ Brno improved to 4-10 on the season. Jindřichův Hradec stayed without a victory in 14 games.
mmcité+ Brno hosts NH Ostrava (5-9) tonight at 8.

The Brno Sports Report is published every Wednesday. All dates and times are subject to change. Most of the stories are about the traditional “English-speaking” team sports — football, hockey, baseball, basketball, American football, rugby, etc. — but it is also about the interesting local spectator and participation sports — tennis, badminton, running, horse racing, swimming, rock climbing, biking, etc. If you have any suggestions for what should be included, please comment below or send an email to brnosports@gmail.com.
