With 72 seconds left in the game on Sunday, Tomáš Bartejs aimed a long slapshot perfectly to beat Olomouc, 1-0, and extend the Kometa winning streak to six.
Kometa swept their three-game homestand with victories over Liberec, Plzeň and Olomouc after winning three road games last week.
“I think we have received the luck we didn’t have in previous matches where we may have been better but we got a goal against us at the end” said coach Kamil Pokorný. “Today we weren’t better but we got the goal anyway. We are glad for the victory, today it was a very important match for us.”
Marek Čiliak earned his fifth shutout against Olomouc.
When the game ended, Kometa was in fifth place with 65 points, well ahead of sixth-place Olomouc (58 points) and behind league-leader Plzeň (76), Hradec Králové (68), Vítkovice (67) and Třinec (67).
Kometa now travel to Litvínov (Friday), Třinec (Sunday) and Zlin (Tuesday). They return home on Friday, Jan. 19 to play second-place Mountfield HK at 6 p.m.
Earlier in the week, Kometa beat Liberec, 3-2, on Wednesday. Martin Erat, who leads the team with 34 points, scored his eighth goal of the season in the 14th minute. Martin Dočekal also scored. So did Jan Štencel, a defender, who notched is first of the year.
Then, on national television, Kometa outlasted league-leading Plzeň, 3-2, in a shootout to add a point to their season total. Alexandre Mallet scored the winning shootout goal.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
mmcité+ Brno beats Ostrava, Loses in Svitavy
Just seconds into a Wednesday night home game against NH Ostrava, Canyon Barry flashed toward the basket, caught a beautiful alley-oop pass from Mladen Primorac and slammed it home. Brno 2, Ostrava 0.
The beautiful assist and the aggressive offense established momentum that mmcité+ Brno nursed through three quarters and then accelerated in the final eight minutes to pull away for an impressive 86-67 win.
Barry led the team with 28 points, including making 10 of his 13 shots from 2-point range. He scored to finish the first quarter with a straight-up-the-key dunk and he scored to finish the first half after a well-choreographed offensive sequence led to a nice top-of-the-key 3-pointer.
Radek Pumprla, in his second game after returning from injury, was 9-for-9 from the free-thrown line and finished with 19 points. Zurab Kereselidze had 14 points.
“We had had problems with assists,” Dekara said, referring to poor ball movement in several losses. “Now, for the past two games, we have had a lot of those.”
When asked to identify the player of the game, Dekara used assists as the tie-breaking criteria: “It is very hard to say,” he said. “If I had to choose, it would be Mladen Primorac because of his eight assists.”
Primorac also had 15 points and eight rebounds.
“Every plan that we were talking about before the game, the guys made it perfect,” Jakara said. “The defense was on a high level.”
As a team Brno was 26 of 33 at the free-throw line.
On Saturday, mmcité+ Brno traveled to DEKSTONE Tuři Svitavy and lost, 98-73. The teams played mostly evenly through the first half, but, at the beginning of the second half, Svitavy pulled away and maintained their advantage through to the end.
“We were terribly disturbed at the beginning of the third quarter when we did not make four or five open 2-point shots,” said Brno point guard Kereselidze. “When we play against such a team, we have to make those shots.”
Primorac led Brno with 22 points. Pumprla and Lelić Dorde, a 28-year-old Serbian who made his first start, had 13 points.
Importantly, Barry, Brno’s leading scorer, was held to one field goal and three free throws, five points. He had scored 28 points in consecutive games.

The Brno Sports Report is published every Wednesday. All dates and times are subject to change. Most of the stories are about the traditional “English-speaking” team sports — football, hockey, baseball, basketball, American football, rugby, etc. — but it is also about the interesting local spectator and participation sports — tennis, badminton, running, horse racing, swimming, rock climbing, biking, etc. If you have any suggestions for what should be included, please comment below or send an email to brnosports@gmail.com.
