Brno, Jan 17 (CTK) – The police have dealt with some 200 road accidents related to adverse weather, heavy snowfalls and black ice, in which more than 20 people were injured, in the South Moravia Region from Tuesday until this morning, regional police spokeswoman Andrea Cejnkova told CTK today.

A total of 189 accidents occurred on Tuesday, while seven were reported in small hours today, she added.

The situation has calmed down since midnight.

Some collisions blocked motorways in the region.

At present, the D1 (Prague-Brno) and D2 (Brno to Slovak border) motorways are passable.

The backbone D1 motorway section on the 99th kilometre in the direction Prague was blocked due to mass accidents of dozens of vehicles for more than 19 hours from Tuesday. One lane was opened there at 8:00 this morning.

The full operation might resume there around 10:00, Road and Motorway Directorate (RSD) spokesman Jan Rydl told CTK.

The state of calamity was declared in South Moravia due to the bad weather and a steep rise in traffic accidents. Regular bus lines were also delayed.

Accidents were reported in all districts of the region.

“The situation was worst between 13:00 and 15:00 on Tuesday when it was snowing most intensively,” Cejnkova said.
