Brno, Jan 18 (BD) – Instead of driving fast through a rescue alley to help people in a crashed car, South Moravian firefighters had to wait several minutes in traffic on the D1 highway, this Tuesday when the snow calamity hit the region.
Many drivers neglect the rules for getting out of the way of emergency vehicles, South Moravian firefighters said.
“It’s the same every time – no rescue alley and a truck problem in the left lane. In addition, this footage is from a car. Behind this car, there is a truck with a tank driving that is bigger and hence it has a bigger problem to drive through,” South Moravian firefighters spokesman Jaroslav Mikoška said about Tuesday’s footage from the D1 section from Brno to Vysočina, according to online daily iDnes.cz.

“Drivers often seem to think that the alley should form at the moment we arrive. But the alley should be ready long before the first car with a blue beacon appears, so the car can pass through easily,” Mikoška explains.
“You see in this video that we are driving extremely slowly since we’re creating the rescue alley here,” he adds.
“On multilane roads and highways, drivers in the left-most lane should pull over to the left. Drivers in all other lanes are instructed to move right, thus opening up an ‘alley’ for emergency vehicles to get through,” Deutsche Welle says about the correct procedure.
