Brno, Jan 24 (BD) – mmcité+ Brno cannot complete comeback, KP Brno wins again, and the Brno sports schedule.

After blitzing through half of the Tipsport extraliga with nine consecutive wins, HC Kometa gave up 15 goals and dropped its last three games.

Kometa did, however, get a point at home on Friday when they took Mountfield HK into extra time, before losing 3-4.

Since then, the defense has given up 11 goals on the road, losing, 5-2 at Mlada Boleslav on Sunday and, 6-2, at Liberec on Tuesday.

Kometa had won all of their games since Christmas to reinvigorate their season after a monthlong slump. Despite their recent three losses, fifth-place Brno is 13 points clear of sixth-place Olomouc. Through Tuesday, Kometa has 75 points. Vítkovice is in third with 77 and Třinec is fourth with 76.

Kometa will host Zlín on Friday at 6 p.m. They travel across the country to Chomutov on Sunday for a 3:30 pm. start. Tuesday they play Sparta in Prague; that game is on television and starts at 6:30 p.m.

There are only nine regular-season games left, although there is a three-week break for the PyeongChang Winter Olympics through most of February. The regular season ends in the first week of March.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Late scoring not enough for mmcité+ Brno

mmcité+ Brno reverted to their old bad habit and started poorly in both halves of their game at BK ARMEX Děčín and, as with many times in the past, making a strong late run was not enough: Děčín beat mmcité+ Brno, 76-67, on Saturday.

Dorde Lelić continued his solid long-range shooting for Brno; he was 3 of 5 from beyond to 3-point line and totaled 15 points. Canyon Barry had 18 points, seven of which came from the free throw line.

Overall, Brno was just 16 of 38 from 2-point range and 5 of 15 from 3-point range, which head coach Dejan Jakara called his team’s constant problem. Jakara was also not happy with the 15 offensive rebounds that Děčín was able to pull down: “They have 15 more chances for a score,” he said after the game.

Mladen Primorac (12 points) and Kevin Mays (10) both reached double-digits in points.

“The last 15 minutes, as I told the team in the locker room, we showed that for sure we can play,” Jakara said, “but we have to avoid these ups and downs against better teams.”

This Saturday at 7 p.m., Brno will host undefeated league-leading ČEZ Basketball Nymburk.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

KP Brno wins again; Žabiny falls at Nymburk

Ludmila Dudáčková stepped up to lead KP Brno against her former team, U19 Chance, 93-57, on Friday night in Brno.

Dudáčková was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field and 6-for-7 at the free throw line. She totaled 16 points, easily eclipsing the zero-, four- and two-point totals of her only other KP Brno games this season. Gabriela Andělová had her best game in two months with 13 points.

Despite this victory and double-digit wins against Slovanka MB and BA Karlovy Vary, KP Brno coach David Zdeněk has not been pleased with his team’s performance so far this calendar year. “We’re working on it and I believe the improvement will come,” he said.

KP Brno is fourth with a record of 11-5.

Basket Žabiny Brno, in sixth place with a 9-6 record, traveled to DSK Basketball Nymburk on Sunday and lost, 68-61. Whitney Bays led the team with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

The Brno Sports Report is published every Wednesday. All dates and times are subject to change. Most of the stories are about the traditional “English-speaking” team sports — football, hockey, baseball, basketball, American football, rugby, etc. — but it is also about the interesting local spectator and participation sports — tennis, badminton, running, horse racing, swimming, rock climbing, biking, etc. If you have any suggestions for what should be included, please comment below or send an email to brnosports@gmail.com.
