Sport has a way of bringing people together, and this is certainly true of cricket. With its emphasis on sportsmanship, cricket is a true celebration of internationalism, diversity, and tolerance. This is also a belief held by Brno Cricket Club (BCC), who have been working tirelessly to promote the sport in South Moravia.
“We hope to let the people of Brno know about the value of playing cricket, and we are working to make cricket popular amongst the youth of Brno as well,” says BCC captain Somesekhar Banerjee.
Unbeknownst to many, BCC has been operating for over 10 years now. They are a member of the Czech Cricket Union, and have their own cricket grounds and clubhouse in the north of Brno, which are the envy of other cricket clubs in Central Europe.
Last year was a particularly successful year for BCC, as they won the Pro 40 Czech Cricket League Division 2 Championship, earning a promotion to Division 1 for the 2018 season.
They have had two players who were members of the Czech National Cricket Team in 2011. Nowadays, they participate in the T20 League.
In addition to their match play and the work they do with the community’s schools, BCC host a number of friendly matches and tournaments with other cricket clubs from countries including Hungary, Poland Austria, and the UK.
BCC currently has 30 active members, but they are hoping to add more as the 2018 season, which runs from April to October, approaches.
Potential cricketers and fans of the game are encouraged to join their Facebook group, or send an enquiry to brnocc@gmail.com. First-time players will be given the opportunity to participate for free.
