Brno, Feb 7 (BD) – Kometa guaranteed their entry into the Tipsport extraliga playoffs when they beat Pardubice, 2-1, on Sunday at DRFG Arena. Then, on Tuesday, they beat host Vitkovice, 0-2, to win three of four games prior to the three-week break for the Winter Olympics.

Kometa beat Vitkovice with first-period goals by Alexandre Mallet and Hynek Zohorna. Martin Nečas assisted on both goals.

The victory moved Brno into a tie with Vitkovice at 86 points. Plzeň (first place, 102 points), Hradec Králové (second, 96) and Třinec (third, 90) are ahead in the standings. Zlín is sixth, 15 points back.

The victory over Pardubice clinched the playoff berth for defending-champion Kometa. Brno tallied both goals in six minutes of the second period when Tomáš Vincour scored in the 25th minute and Radim Zohorna scored in the 31st minute.

Earlier in the week, Kometa gave up goals in the final minute of the first and third periods to lose at Jihlava, 2-0, on Friday.

Tipsport extraliga play will resume on Wednesday, Feb. 28, when Kometa will host league-leading Plzeň at 6 p.m. The postseason will begin in early March.

In order to stay sharp, Kometa will play a preparation game on Tuesday, Feb. 20, against HC Sochi. The game starts at 6 p.m. HC Sochi is the main team from the previous host city of the Winter Olympics, Sochi, Russia. They are currently sixth in the 13-team West Division of the Kontinental Hockey League.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Personal Best All Around for Žabiny, Technic

With starters Tea Buzov and Jana Hausknechtová unable to play, three women stepped up with season-high performances to lead Žabiny Brno to a 64-79 road victory over Sokol Nilfisk Hradec Králové on Friday.

Whitney Bays, who started with Žabiny Brno in mid-December, had 21 points and 17 rebounds. Klára Křivánková scored 20 and Beáta Adamcová had 15. All are personal season highs.

“Today was a huge, heroic performance by our players,” said Viktor Pruša, the head coach of Žabiny Brno.

Žabiny Brno (10-7) are sixth in the ŽBL and enter the two-week break in league play in good position to play in the top half of the bracket in the second half of the regular season. KP Brno (12-5), which did not play this week, is fifth.

Technic Brno (2-15) will play in the lower half of the bracket, but they gave BLK Slavia Praha (12-5) a scare when the two teams met in Brno last Thursday. Technic played strong until the final frame, when Slavia pulled away to win, 77-87.

Brno’s Tereza Zítková, who started the season with a 28-point game, has found her shooting stroke in 2018. She scored 19 on Jan. 12; 20 on Jan. 28; and topped all scorers with 27 points against Slavia. She was 5 of 11 from 2-point range and 4 of 8 from 3-point range, and she had a season-high seven rebounds.

Monika Stehlíková, who was 9 of 15 from short range, had a personal season-high 24 points for Technic.

“Today’s match was very good on both sides,” said Technic Brno head coach Lucie Zítková. “I must praise the girls, they played the best match of the season. The fought well on defense and there was excellent cooperation on offense. This led us to an excellent result: we managed to lose by only 10 points with our excellent opponent. ”

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Top team doubles up mmcité+ Brno

The best mmcité+ Brno could do in any of the four quarters was 13 points and Opava rolled, 80-47, at home.

“I don’t know what to say: They beat us,” said Brno head coach Dejan Jakara. “They played aggressively. We were prepared for this but our reaction was not enough.”

The Brno offensive output was actually two points less than in their previous game against undefeated league-leaders ČEZ Basketball Nymburk last week. In two games, Brno has given up 182 points and scored just 96.

“We again had big problems with our shooting,” Jakara said. “We also had too many turnovers, 22. On an away court like here in Opava it is almost impossible to win.”

Brno (6-14) was led by Canyon Barry’s 15 points.

mmcité+ Brno hosts BK JIP Pardubice tonight at 8 p.m. Pardubice (14-6) is second in the Kooperativa NBL.
