The Moravian Library is organizing a special cultural program to celebrate Black History Month. The events take place on February 13th, 22nd and 26th in the event room at Moravská Zemská Knihovna.
These cultural activities are ideal for people who are interested in multiculturalism and want to have a deeper insight into African-American history as well as a better understanding of societal issues that they have overcome so far.
The reading group will discuss the novel “Beloved” written by Toni Morrison. The story is inspired by the true story of Margaret Garner, an African American who fled to Ohio, a free state, to escape slavery. You can borrow the book in the Foreign Library section of the Moravian Library, or write an e-mail to zhr@mzk.cz to make a reservation.
A peek into African-American Culture – with the help of Haitian-American poet Bendjhi Villiers, participants will have the opportunity to learn more about and get involved with African culture, from music and lyrics to poetry.
“13th” is a film named after the 13th Amendment to the US constitution that prohibited slavery. The film explores issues such as racial inequality and injustice in the United States. Last year, “13th” won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Documentary.
