Brno, Feb 17 (BD) – The city of Brno was among the first in the country to introduce the concept of participatory budgeting in which the citizens decide on how to spend a part of the local budget via democratic voting.
“Dáme na vás”, the first set of participatory budgeting projects in Brno, was launched at the beginning of 2017.
In 2017, the city allocated 20 million crowns for the development of these projects, with each initiative receiving up to 2 million.
This year, the city has allocated 30 million crowns to the participatory budget, 10 million crowns more than last year. At the same time, the limit for a single project has been raised by 50 percent to a maximum of 3 million crowns, the municipality said in a press release.
Citizens can submit a project proposal until May 31, 2018. For information on the conditions that must be met by project proposals, visit the project web site: www.damenavas.brno.cz.
For a plan to be considered by the municipality, it has to get a minimum of 300 “likes” (up from 150 in 2017) on the website, or a paper petition signed by at least 30 citizens (up from 15 in 2017) must be submitted, the official website reads.
If the project reaches these requirements and is proven to be feasible by the city, it will have a chance to be selected for implementation in a final vote.
As of February 17, there is only one project in the official “project gallery”.
Last year, 16 projects were selected for realization. The three most popular winning projects were the pedestrian and bicycle paths from Žebětín to Kohoutovice, the community and leisure centre at Kraví hora, and Holedná Lookout Tower.
