Brno, Mar 7 (BD) – As you may have noticed if you have been doing any sightseeing over the past week, Villa Tugendhat is currently closed to the public.
The reason? The Glass Room, an international feature-length film set to be released in 2019, is currently being filmed there.
Based on the 2009 novel by Simon Mawer, the film adaptation of this story is rumoured to include some high-profile celebrities, with Leo Barraclough reporting in Variety that Game of Thrones star Carice van Houten, the Dutch actress who plays Melisandre (the Red Priestess) in the HBO hit series, will play a leading role.
Although the production team for this feature-length drama has kept mum on casting and filming specifics, Barraclough also speculated that Sweden’s Hanna Alström, who played Princess Tilde in Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017) and Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014), and Czech actor Karel Roden, who currently plays ‘Karel Benes’ in the TV series McMafia and appeared in The Bourne Supremacy (2004) as ‘Gretkov’, would have roles in the film. Similar information appeared earlier in Czech media, for example in iDnes.cz.
According to the film’s press release, the film is being directed by Czech national Julius Ševčík, the director of Normal (2009), A Prominent Patient (2016), and a number of other award-winning films.
“We appreciate the support of the City of Brno and the opportunity to film in the unique interior of Villa Tugendhat,” producer Rudolf Biermann was quoted in the film’s press release.
Given the storyline, those who have visited Villa Tugendhat will understand why this venue was chosen for filming.
“The film […] tells the story of people whose lives, love and friendship were punctuated by the dramatic events of the 20th century. The fate of Liesel and Viktor Landauer, their friends, employees, and the extraordinary architect Von Abt are framed by one of the most original modernist buildings in Europe,” reads the film’s press release.

Villa Tugendhat is closed for filming until March 17. Those wishing to catch a glimpse of the iconic villa are reminded that, due to its popularity, booking two to three months ahead is advisable.
