Brno, Mar 7 (BD) – Brno’s municipal government (Zastupitelstvo města Brna) voted on the future of the Central Railway Station last week (Feb. 27) and decided to support the “by the river alternative”. Thirty-one representatives voted in favour of the “by the river alternative”, 4 voted against and 7 abstained, the City of Brno announced in an official press release.
The adopted resolution recommends the construction of a new station which will include a new underground transport connection.
The new transit connection North-South Rail Diameter (Severojižní kolejový diametr), which may call to mind a subway, is to connect the north of the city with the center and the south. You can see the visualisations of the new Central Station in Brno here: In photos: future Central Station in Brno.
The recommendations of the regional representatives and the City Council will be submitted to the Ministry of Transport, which will have the final say. The government’s ruling should be made by the beginning of the summer holiday, Czech News Agency (ČTK) reported on Monday.
At Monday’s press conference, Mayor Petr Vokřál (ANO) advocated the construction of the new railway station on the site of today’s “Dolní nádraží” with the specifications of construction of the underground railway in compliance with last week’s recommendations by Brno’s municipal government.
According to Mayor Vokřál, Brno won’t need to wait long for the North-South Rail Diameter. Vokřál said that “if the City of Brno is going to work intensively, its citizens will not wait for decades for the underground railway”, as was the case for the tram to the bus station in Zvonařka, Brno local daily Brněnská drbna wrote on Monday.
Construction of the station is estimated to take about six years. The “by the river alternative” is worth 42 to 45 billion crowns (construction start could be in 2020), while the “under Petrov” station was estimated to cost between 42 and 56 billion crowns (construction start could be in 2026), Czech Television (ČT) reported in January.

Brno will soon launch a major communications campaign to inform the public about its plans for the central station. The city will ask for the citizens’ suggestions for a name for the new station. “I would like the citizens to compete on how the station will be named,” said Mayor Vokřál, according to information published in Brněnská drbna yesterday.
