Brno, Mar 19 (BD) – Šedá will choose 1,918 people from the Czech and Slovak Republics to go on a date to celebrate the 100 years since the establishment of Czechoslovakia. “While a celebration may mean different things to different people, all will agree on one basic thing. Celebrating alone is no celebration at all,” the artist writes on her official website.
“EX:PO / The greatest Czechoslovak dating event” for 1,918 people will be part of the Re:publika festival, which will take place in Brno from May 26 to June 17, 2018.
“I find it essential not to look back to the past, not recapitulate, but to choose a single key issue and try to move forward with it. One such issue is, for example, the long-lasting occurrence of a high divorce rate and low wedding rate,” the artist writes.
“Hundreds of people communicate on Facebook,” she continues, “but in the street they won’t look you in the eye. As a result I decided to conceive of the celebration of the republic’s anniversary as an opportunity to give people a chance to meet the right one and start a new life.”
However, because of the public incentive of more than four million Czech crowns from state and municipal funds, Šedá has received negative feedback from the opposition and part of the public. She even considered not implementing the project, Czech Television (ČT) wrote on Friday, March 16.
Kateřina Šedá, born in Brno in 1977, is famous for her socially oriented experiments. Šedá graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague in 2005. In the same year, she won the Jindřich Chalupecký Award for the best Czech artist under 35 years of age.
