Petřín Hill in Prague and Špilberk Castle in Brno will be among hundreds of public buildings in the Czech Republic that will turn off their lights for an hour this evening to mark Earth Hour and the need to conserve energy to combat the effects of climate change.
Earth Hour is an event created by the World Wildlife Federation (WWF) and is observed in countries all over the world.
“Millions choose to mark Earth Hour by going ‘lights out’ for 60 minutes at 8.30pm – a symbolic show of solidarity for the planet,” reads the official WWF website.
Other famous landmarks around the world that will be participating in Earth Hour include Sydney Opera House, the Eiffel Tower, Buckingham Palace, and Edinburgh Castle, according to the same WWF web page.
In Brno, Špilberk Castle, New Town Hall, and Obelisk in Denisovy sady will be “switched off”. Find the list of all public and private supporters in the Czech Republic on the official website Hodina Země, sponsored by the Veronica Ecological Institute, who organise Earth Hour in the Czech Republic.
“This is done by the symbolic switching off of lights for one hour, whether it’s public lighting, illuminating a monument, a company sign, or a living room. This simple yet visible act – lights off – is a signal to public officials that more attention should be paid to protecting the environment, especially climate protection,” Petr Ledvina from Veronica Ecological Institute explains on its website.
You can get involved, too, by promising to adopt one or more of eight environmental behaviours listed on the WWF’s Earth Hour website (follow the ‘Make Your Promise’ link on the website), and of course by turning your lights off for an hour beginning at 8:30pm tonight.
