Brno, May 9 (BD) — KP Brno finishes outstanding season as runner up in ZBL; mmcité+ Brno finishes season with fifth win in six games; Zbrojovka down to final chance to save season; Draci, Hroši continue winning; Lokomotiva earns a point in first of three road games; and the Brno sports schedule.

AMERICAN FOOTBALL

Two Local Games: Sígrs Saturday, Alligators Sunday

After two weeks on the road, both Brno teams will return home this weekend. The Brno Sígrs host the last-place Pilsen Patriots on Saturday at 2 p.m. and the Brno Alligators host the second-place Prague Lions on Sunday at 2 p.m. Both games will be at Ragby Bystrc.

These games are actually return engagements for the most recent matchups. The Sígrs won at Pilsen, 21-28, last weekend, while the Alligators lost at the Prague Lions, 51-13.

Both Brno teams are 2-2, although the Sígrs’ losses came on heart-breaking late scores. In fact, the Sígrs have scored 98 points while allowing just 68. The Alligators, who have already played the two top teams in the league, have scored 59 and allowed 113.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

KP Brno Takes Second in ZBL

KP Brno had been on a roll since the calendar flipped to 2018, winning its first Czech Cup and then entering the finals of the ZBL for the first time In 24 years with a 17-2 record.

Unfortunately, their run stopped in the Finals. USK Praha went unbeaten through the regular season and postseason and ran away with the title. It is, in fact, the fifth season in a row that USK Praha has dominated the season in this way.

On Wednesday, KP Brno went to Prague and lost Game 3, 80-50. It was the eighth consecutive title for

USK Praha.

Edita Šujanová finished the season as the top scorer for KP Brno with an average of 14.6 points in 33 games. Sonia Ursu was a midseason addition to the team; she averaged 11.7 points in 15 games. Ilona Burgrová, who retired at the end of the season after a long internationally successful career, averaged 10.3 points through 32 games.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

mmcité+ Brno Finishes Season on a Roll

mmcité+ Brno started the season with two wins in three games and finished the season with five wins in the final six games.

Overall, mmcité+ Brno was 14-24 during the 2017-18 season and, importantly, they will stay in the Kooperativa NBL for next season.

Though the ending streak was in the Play Out Bracket, Brno topped 100 points three times and its loss was by only two points.

Canyon Barry, who came to the team in midseason, finished sixth in the league with an 18-point average through 25 games. Dorde Lelić averaged 13.3 points in 19 games. Mladen Primorac, who was in the starting lineup in the season-opener, averaged 13.1 through 37 games.

MEN’S FOOTBALL

Zbrojovka Must Win To Stay In Top League

FC Zbrojovka Brno is last in the 16-team Het Liga. They are six points deep in the relegation zone. And they have only three games left to find a miracle.

The top team in Brno, the second largest city in the Czech Republic, must start winning if they are to avoid the ignominious fate of dropping into the second league.

Zbrojovka has won only five games this season and earned only 20 total points. There are three games remaining: at Teplice (33 points) on Sunday at 5 p.m.; Jihlava (29) at home on Saturday, May 19 at 4 p.m.; and at 14th-place Baník Ostrava (26) on Saturday, May 26 at 4 p.m. The bottom two teams are relegated to the second league at the end of the season.

The team came out fighting early in its home game against Jablonec on Saturday, but they could not sustain their momentum, left opponents unmarked in the offensive zone, gave up a penalty-kick goal and lost 0-3.

BASEBALL

Draci, Hroši Win Twice Again

Draci Brno beat the Třebíč Nuclears twice — 6-2 in Brno on Friday and 0-4 in Třebíč on Saturday — to maintain its postion at the top of the Extraliga standings with a record of 13-1. On Sunday, Radim Chroust went eight innings, giving up just three hits. Martin Schneider gave up a hit but finished off the shutout.

Cardion Hroši Brno also won twice this weekend, beating Tempo Titans Praha 4-1 in Brno on Saturday and then going to Prague to win 3-11 on Sunday behind the 4 RBIs of Alexander Derhak (three hits, including a home run). They are in fourth place with a 9-4 record, behind Arrows Ostrava (11-3) and Kotlářka Praha (10-3).

Technika Brno continued to struggle by losing a double-header on Kravi Hora to Skokani Olomouc. Game 1 was 3-4 and Game 2 was 1-4. Technika is now 1-12, ahead of only winless Olympia Blansko.

WOMEN’S FOOTBALL

Lokomotiva Earns a Point at Hradec Králové

After dropping its first two games in the Play Out bracket, Lokomotiva Brno Horni Herspice earned a point with a scoreless tie at FC Hradec Králové on Saturday.

Lokomotiva has two more road games — at FK Dukla Praha on May 13 and at FC Slovan Liberec on May 26 — before returning home for the season finale on June 2 when they host FC Hradec Králové at 11 a.m.

The team that finishes the six rounds of the Play Out bracket with the least points will be relegated to the second league.

The Brno Sports Report is published every Wednesday. All dates and times are subject to change. Most of the stories are about the traditional “English-speaking” team sports — football, hockey, baseball, basketball, American football, rugby, etc. — but it is also about the interesting local spectator and participation sports — tennis, badminton, running, horse racing, swimming, rock climbing, biking, etc. If you have any suggestions for what should be included, please comment below or send an email to brnosports@gmail.com.
