Nowadays, we are living in a consumption society, every day feeding the unhealthy habit of collecting things we don’t need, while some unique treasures that no longer satisfy our desires are forgotten or simply thrown away.

This Thursday will see the 1st edition of the International Flea Market, the marketplace that doesn’t know the meaning of waste.

The market will take place from 5pm to 8pm at Domeq (map).

Sabina Jelínková, organiser of this event, explained that “Dobrá Karma (Good Karma) is already a regular project in Brno… I am a good friend of Zbyněk Hanko, the founder, so we talked about the idea of doing a special edition with foreigners and expats as our target… Foreigners are constantly coming to and leaving Brno. Sometimes they need to buy a lot of cheap things and sometimes they need to sell them when they leave…”.

Jelínková believes that “when you do good deeds, you receive some good karma and good will come back to you. By selling your things, you are giving them a second chance of being useful and that will make someone happy.”

The main purpose of this event is “(t)o help people share and sell their belongings – clothes, books, vinyl, handmade items, jewellery, bags, furniture, bikes – anything except financial products or services,” explained Jelínková.

“The ecology value is very important, too,” she added. “There is too much production of single-use goods. We are always buying instead of repairing, and we don’t want to spend time selling our things or giving them to somebody who can actually still appreciate them. It is also a good way to earn money or spend less on things you need.”

According to Jelínková, “flea markets used to be a meeting point for people on the weekends. So, another important aspect is to support meeting people and socialising – selling items and talking to people is a nice experience, as opposed to just posting things on Letgo, Facebook and other social media… Social contact is so important!”

“We are trying to make Domeq a more lively place and take advantage of that great venue. The event will take place in the lobby of Domeq and outside – it depends on the weather and the number of people… There will be drinks, including tasty coffee and fresh lemonade by Industra Coffee”, explained Jelínková.

So if you hold the same values that Dobrá Karma does, or just have an interest in attending it, note that for the general public, there is no need to register and entrance is free.

For those who want to participate as a seller, fill out an application form (here). There will also be a fee of CZK 200.
