Brno, May 16 (BD) — Sígrs Win Again; Hroši extend winning streak to nine; Lokomotiva in tough fight to save season; and the Brno sports schedule.

MEN’S FOOTBALL

Zbrojovka Keeps Hope Alive With Victory at Teplice

With nothing to lose and a desperate need to win, FC Zbrojovka Brno scored four goals at Teplice to win 4-1 on Saturday.

Last-place Zbrojovka has 23 points through 28 of 30 rounds of the HET Liga season. MKF Karvina is next with 26 points and FC Banik Ostrava has 27. The bottom two teams are relegated to a lower league.

There is still a way for Zbrojovka to survive, although their fate is out of their hands. The most likely saving situation would be as follows over the final weekends of the season:
• This Saturday: Zbrojovka beats Jihlava at home. Banik Ostrava travels to Karvina and the game ends in a tie.
• Then, next Saturday: Zbrojovka beats Banik in Ostrava. Karvina loses at Jihlava.
(All league games start at 4 p.m. on the following Saturdays to discourage the possibility of cheating.)

This hypothetical situation would end with Zbrojovka in 14th place with 29 points; Ostrava and Karvina would be relegated with 28 and 27 points, respectively. Stranger things have happened in sports.

“We’re in the game, but we know we do not have it in our hands,” said Zbrojovka head coach Roman Pivarník. “It’s on the edge. We’ll see what’s going to be enough. We just want to concentrate on the closest match and then we’ll see what’s going to happen.”

At Teplice, 19-year-old Antonín Růsek scored his first top-league goal on a nice header in the 18th minute. Then, in the second half, Rafael Acosta (50th minute), Konstantin Bazeljuk (69th) , Ladislav Krejčí (84th) added goals. Krejčí, also 19, also scored his first HET Liga goal.

AMERICAN FOOTBALL

Lindsey scores three TDs, Leads Sígrs to Victory

The Brno Sígrs pulled away late from the visiting Pilsen Patriots to win 27-17 and move into third place in the CAAF standings.

The Sígrs (3-2) fell behind by 14 points, but two big-play touchdowns — Michael Lindsey had a 54-yard punt return and then a 50-yard run — evened the score at halftime at 14-14.

In the fourth quarter, a 2-yard run by Daniel Schmied negated a Pilsen field-goal lead, then Lindsey scored his third touchdown — a 10-yard run — with 1:53 left in the game.

The Alligators (2-3) played the Prague Lions (5-1) for the second time in two weeks. They lost 0-49 at home on Sunday after losing 51-13 on May 5 in Prague.

The Sígrs travel to play the Aquaponik Ostrava Steelers (3-2) at 3 p.m. on Sunday. The Alligators will play at Prague Black Panthers (4-0) at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

BASEBALL

Hroši Win Ninth in a Row

Cardion Hroši Brno have a nice winning streak going as they reach the midpoint of the Extraliga season in fourth place with an 11-4 record. They are only one game behind both Kotlářka Praha (12 -3) and Arrows Ostrava (13-4).

Draci Brno (16-1) top the standings.

Hroši Brno extended their winning streak to nine when they beat the Nuclears, 4-14, on Friday in Třebíč and again 17-0 in Brno on Saturday.

Draci Brno scored in the double-digits in three games last weekend, beating Skokani Olomouc 11-6 in Brno on Friday, beating host Skokani Olomouc 3-11 on Saturday and blanking Arrows Ostrava 0-10 on Sunday.

Technika Brno, however, continues to struggle. They travelled to Kotlářka Praha and lost both games of a doubleheader, 4-3 and 14-1.

WOMEN’S FOOTBALL

Lokomotiva Continues Struggle in Play Out Bracket

Lokomotiva Brno Horni Herspice’s Anna Pušková scored a goal in the 90th minute, but it was too little and too late as FK Dukla Praha won, 4-1.

Lokomotiva, which finished just shy of the Play Off Bracket, has since lost three games and tied only one in four games of the Play Out Bracket. The team that finishes the six rounds of the Play Out bracket with the least points will be relegated to the second league.

The team gets a weekend off, then plays at FC Slovan Liberec on May 26. They finish the season at home on June 2 when they host FC Hradec Králové at 11 a.m.

The Brno Sports Report is published every Wednesday. All dates and times are subject to change. Most of the stories are about the traditional “English-speaking” team sports — football, hockey, baseball, basketball, American football, rugby, etc. — but it is also about the interesting local spectator and participation sports — tennis, badminton, running, horse racing, swimming, rock climbing, biking, etc. If you have any suggestions for what should be included, please comment below or send an email to brnosports@gmail.com.
