If so, then Open Studios 2018 is a perfect time to satisfy your curiosity, meet artists, begin or continue your art education and generally have a great time with a variety of people from different walks of life as you visit artists’ studios and galleries. Brno, May 30 (BD) – Organised by Václav Koči, an artist in his own right, for the previous 5 years in co-operation with small and state galleries, this years’ event is even more special due to the involvement of Brno House of Arts, specifically its residential programme, entitled Brno Artist in Residence, whose artists will also open their doors to visitors bringing the total number of artists involved to almost 60.
Vaclav’s enthusiasm for and dedication to the project came across very clearly in an interview with Brno Daily. His obvious desire to “show the face of the art scene” in Brno and open the doors to what is often a very private industry has certainly piqued my interest.
Beyond art
Visiting an artists studio is a very different experience from going to a gallery. The artists are essentially welcoming you into their personal space and giving you an insight into the realities of their life, not only their work.

Each studio is used by several artists who have formed what are known as creative clusters (shluk in Czech). There is no prescribed format for the artists to follow and it is up to them how they present their work. In some studios artists may give individual presentations while others will simply mingle with guests and answer questions. The style of studio will also vary greatly with some being in old factories or bulidlings of interest which will appeal to those with an interest in architecture.
A packed programme
In addition to wandering around the studios at your leisure there is also an option to join a guided tour, in Czech, with experts Marika Kupková (a curator and art theoretician) and Markéta Žáčková (art historian and theoretician). As there are now 11 studios on the guided tour it will be split over 2 days:
Friday, 3-8pm (5 studios)
Saturday 11am-6pm (6 studios)
The programme lists the approximate arrival time at each studio so you can feel free do the whole tour or join those which take your fancy or fit your schedule.

Party time
No great event would be complete without food and drinks and Open Studios is providing the opportunity for visitors to attend the after party on both Friday and Saturday where fun, entertainment and music will abound, food will be plentiful and drink will flow.
Visitors can expect to receive an open and very friendly welcome throughout the two days as they explore a world which is unfamiliar to some and seek advice from those to whom the scene is more familiar.
