Brno, Jun 6 (BD) – The long-term initiative laid out in a document titled Housing Strategy of the City of Brno 2018-2030 is expected to help in solving the city’s current housing problems. Yesterday, the City Council of Brno (Rada) recommended it to the Brno City Government (Zastupitelstvo) for approval.
Its scope is the state of housing in Brno over next twelve years, based on an analysis of current trends in housing. The document also contains proposals for solving major problems related to housing in Brno.
In reality, this means that “the supply will outweigh the demand, and the cost of buying or renting will be more affordable to the general public,” city spokesman Filip Poňuchálek explained in an official press release yesterday.
“The document also envisions the preparation of construction sites in various parts of the city, and a new development plan that will allow a flexible response to building needs,” Poňuchálek further specified. “The city also plans to provide housing for people with specific needs,” he added.
“The specific measures to support construction in the city include an annual investment of CZK 300 million in the technical infrastructure that serves as preparation for construction projects,” said First Deputy Mayor Petr Hladík
The priorities of the strategy include: preserving the city’s current real estate holdings and increasing the city’s share in the housing market; an increase in construction of all types of housing; housing support for people with specific needs; and improvement of communication and co-operation with residents and other organisations.
The strategy aims for the city to maintain ownership of at least 15% of the total number of apartments in Brno.
The document identifies nine priority locations for housing development that the city and private developers want to invest in and prepare for construction:

The vision of the strategy is to make Brno an attractive regional centre and an appealing place to live for the coming generations – a city that will provide a clean and safe environment for all age groups. The aim is to make housing in Brno affordable, healthy and high in quality, and to develop it within the historical and natural context of the city, reads the document on the city’s official website.
