The construction of the tram line from Starý Lískovec to the university campus in Brno-Bohunice is scheduled to start in February next year. The estimated price is 1.2 billion Czech crowns. Brno, Jun 14 (BD) – Currently, there is no tram line connecting the center and the university campus. This could change in 2022, at least according to the procurement procedure approved by Brno Council on Tuesday.

The tram line will relieve the overloaded trolleybuses in the direction of Mendlovo Square. Thousands of students, university employees, and professionals commute to the campus area as it is a place of many university institutions and seats of international companies. Brno University Hospital is in the immediate vicinity of the campus so there are also many patients and their visitors coming every day.

“Today, people use trolleybuses and bus lines, but those are already at the limit of their capacity. It can be assumed that the number of passengers will continue to grow when this area will develop further,” said Richard Mrázek, Deputy Mayor for Investment and Transport, according to the official press release.

“Rail transport is the most appropriate solution in terms of the extended transport capacities and the environment,” Mrázek concluded.
