Brno, Jul 25 (BD) – Inside the Augustinian Abbey where Gregor Johann Mendel lived part of his life, the Gothic treasury room was opened to the public for the first time last Friday. There are only two similar places in the Czech Republic – the basilica of St. Prokop in Třebíč and the chapel of the monastery in Zlatá koruna.

The treasury is one of the oldest preserved parts of the abbey. In this unique room, visitors can admire the most valuable objects from the abbey’s collections in the original cabinets, including the coronation ensemble of abbot Matouš Pertscher.

The cathedral in Mendlovo náměstí was built by Queen Eliška Rejčka, wife of Czech King Václav II, who also founded a Cistercian monastery there in 1323. In 1783, the Order of Saint Augustine moved into the former Cistercian monastery. The abbey was at the centre of the spiritual, academic and social life of the city and housed the experiments of Gregor Johann Mendel (1822–1884), scientist, Augustinian friar and abbot of St. Thomas’ Abbey in Brno, known as the founder of modern genetics.
