Brno, Jul 30 (BD) – This year’s 373rd-anniversary celebrations will take place over two weekends on Petrov and Špilberk, the two hills of Brno. On the first weekend of August 11 and 12, there will be a spiritual programme in and around Petrov cathedral. During the week between the main weekends, there will be an entertainment programme for children and workshops. (See the event on Facebook for details). On Saturday, August 18, Brno’s celebrations culminate in a historical battle re-enactment with troops on Špilberk.
In 1645, during the final phase of the Thirty Years’ War, Brno was the only city that successfully fended off the Swedish expansion. Brno resisted the three-month siege (May, 3–August, 23), and thus prevented the advance to Vienna, allowing the Austrian Empire to reform its army and repel the Swedes.
