In June, City mayor Petr Vokřál announced a public vote to choose the name for Brno’s new central station. The deadline for suggestions to be submitted is August 31. Photo credit: @BrnoDaily.

Brno, Aug 6 (BD) – If the public vote on the name of the new Brno central railway station closed today, the new name would be simply “Brno, main railway station” [“Brno, hlavní nádraží”], the same name the current station bears today. This is by far the most frequently suggested name that meets the requirements of the vote, having been submitted almost 100 times, according to an official press release from the Brno municipality last Friday.

Other frequent suggestions are names inspired by famous personalities such as J. G. Mendel or T. Masaryk, ‘mischief’ suggestions such as Brnbán tulipán, and names in the Brno local dialect of hantec, such as Šalingrad, Rola Brno, Nádr, and Hlavas, all of which appear repeatedly. One of the most original submissions was a name consisting of the coordinates of the current station “49°11′26,09″ s. š., 16°36′46,09″ v. d.”. “We are very pleased that so many people have participated. I like their creativity; we have been surprised by a great popularity of Jára Cimrman. I would personally prefer to name the new railway station after a historical personality connected with Brno, but the citizens will have the last say,” said Mayor Vokřál.

In the first half of the voting period, the municipality received a total of 2,571 proposals, of which 1,174 were unique, 868 were duplicates, and 529 were excluded because they didn’t comply with the rules of the competition.

People can submit their suggestions at soutez.nasnovejnadr.cz. The suggestions cannot include the names of living personalities and cannot be submitted in foreign languages.
