Brno, Sep 4 (BD) – One such new opportunity is the community group Czech Theater, z.s. This group will be holding auditions on September 8 and 9 for its inaugural play R.U.R. by Karel Čapek, the play that introduced the word “robot” to the world.
The auditions will be held at Music Lab from 4-8 each day and are open to all amateurs regardless of whether they have previous theater experience.
“Theater has long been an important means of expression, protest, and social commentary for Czechs,” says Anne Johnson, one of the founders of Czech Theater. “We’re hoping to open this world up for foreigners to help bridge the gaps between the communities.”
R.U.R. has a long production history, having premiered in Prague in 1921, and international success, with a premiere in New York City in 1922 and translations into dozens of languages. It was prescient for its time and the questions it raises remain relevant today.
“We’re hoping to connect with other people who love the theater,” says Aaron Collier, another of Czech Theater’s founders. “And the play has up to 14 parts, so we have room for lots of actors.” Even people who are more interested in backstage (costumes, makeup, etc) than acting are welcome to join the fun.
