Šustr Makes Home Coaching Debut Sunday

What does the new coach of Zbrojovka do on a weekend that has no game because of international play?

Play football, of course.

Pavel Šustr, the head coach of FC Zbrojovka Brno, returned to the field of his youth in Horni Herspice to play in an exhibition game on Saturday afternoon. He scored for the Zbrojoka Veterans team as they squared off against a team from Ano, a political-party squad which was led by Brno Mayor Petr Vokřál and former world champion figure skater René Novotný.

After his brief time on the field, Šustr made time to evaluate his real team’s preparation for their next game — Táborsko on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. — and his first game on the home sidelines as the head coach.

“We’re still at the beginning of the journey,” Šustr said. “We’re moving forward. I think that we’ll start to play winning football.”

Šustr was promoted from coaching the youth team at the beginning of September. His first game was a 2-2 tie at league-leading Ústí nad Labem.

“We have good players and we have a good future,” he said. “I think we’ll only continue to get better.”

Zbrojovka has scored 13 goals, including at least one in each of its seven games. They are 2-2-3 for eight points and currently in ninth place of the Fortuna:Narodni Liga. They have also given up 13 goals. Both goals scored and goals allowed are the second most in the league.

Zbrojovka Wins Again In MOL Cup

Zbrojovka traveled to Rosice and advanced in the MOL Cup last Wednesday with an 0-2 victory.

Brno got on the board in the 13th minute when Lukáš Kryštůfek sent a pass through to Petr Pavlik, who gave the goalkeeper no chance for a save. The second goal was an own goal by Rosice at the 19-minute mark.

Zbrojovka has outscored its two MOL Cup opponents, 4-0.

WOMEN’S FOOTBALL

Lokomotiva, Liberec End in Scoreless Tie

In their first home game of the season, Lokomotiva Brno-Herni Herspice failed to connect on several offensive runs and finished with a scoreless tie against FC Slovan Liberec on Saturday. The point they earned put them at four through three games. Lokomotiva’s record is 1-1-1.

“I feel like it was a hard fought game,” said Andrew Petrina, who hails from Toronto. “We didn’t really capitalize on the chances that we did get in front. Obviously we wish that we could have generated that one goal.”

Petrina and striker Jada Abarca often moved the ball toward the Liberec goal. They both had several nice runs that failed to materialize, particularly in the second half.

Added Abarca, a striker from Dallas, said: “I think we played very well together. We were able to keep the ball moving forward.”

Head coach Vladimír Beker saw positives in the offensive performance. He was also quick to point out the fact that the defense gave up no goals.

“The defensive middle was strong throughout the game, particularly captain Tereza Krištofová and Nikol Chlapkova,” he said. “We have to concentrate on the offensive phase and finishing because we have to convert our chances. This weekend we are going to Plzen, which is a very quality team. We have to put in there more centers.”

Plzen is 2-0-1 and in third place with six points.

The remaining home games are later in the fall: on Sept. 22 Lokomotiva hosts SK Slavia Praha, then there are three in a row against 1. FC Slovácko on Oct. 13, AC Sparta Praha on Oct. 20 and FK Dukla Praha on Oct. 27.
