Comic book organizations in Brno, KOMIXXX, Šaufenstr Gallery, and Aargh! Magazine, have joined forces and will present countless forms of comic and contemporary art as two interconnected worlds at the Koma Festival this week at Malá Amerika in Brno. Photo credit: Koma Festival.

This year, the KOMA Festival is focusing on the topics of Extinction and Endangered species, with subtopics such as minorities, folklore, tradition, ethnicity, subcultures, social isolation, migration, ecology, biodiversity and endemism. “KOMA focuses on borderline interests, isolated and disappearing societies, habits, and tendencies,” said Andrea Stašková, from the PR office of the festival.

KOMA Festival’s mix of exhibitions, live painting, art installations, film screenings, workshops, a comic book market, concerts, theatre and storytelling makes this event “an actual living organism,” Stašková explained to Brno Daily. “The atmosphere of the festival is fairly informal – visitors, the staff and artists communicate on a common basis. There are also food and drinks available throughout the whole festival. Entrance is free for all events except the evening programme from 7 PM (concerts, DJs, performance),” added Stašková.

The festival has gradually grown in numbers over the past few years. At the end of its Thursday-to-Sunday programme, the visitor count reaches roughly a thousand, peaking on Friday and Saturday. The venue of the 4th International Comic festival 2018 will be two industrial halls with an area of over 1000 m2 at Malá Amerika, Hybešova 1, 602 00 Brno.

Information and program details are available on the Koma Festival website.
