MEN’S BASKETBALL

Egoé Brno Brings Exciting Play Home on Saturday

Though they had a double-digit lead midway through the fourth quarter, egoé Brno got caught and got stung by a last-second 3-pointer by USK Praha, losing 77-76 last Saturday.

It ended the Brno winning streak at three in the league and four overall.

Nevertheless, Brno is playing exciting basketball and breaking through the malaise of previous years. The next home game is Saturday against BK JIP Pardubice. Tip off is 7 p.m.

USK Praha was down for most of the game. They outscored Brno 28-14 in the final quarter.

“It is a tough loss. There were too many turnovers,” said Brno head coach Dejan Jakara. “We have had some luck in previous games. What goes around comes around. I think in the end it was a fair game.”

The head coach for the Prague team, Dino Repeša, felt that his team’s defensive pressure was the difference: “(Brno) controlled the game for 35 minutes,” he said. “Finally our defensive pressure came through. From this defensive pressure we had lots of easy defensive points, transition points.”

Deremy Geiger had his best scoring game for Brno, totaling 26 points largely by going 6-for-8 from 3-point range. The rest of the team, which has relied on the long ball, was only 2 of 11.

In the Alpe Adria Cup, Brno lost at Zalakeramia ZTE KK, 88-70, on Monday.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Gašicová Leads Teamsport to victory in Ostrava

Teamstore Brno went to Ostrava on Wednesday and, behind the lights-out shooting of Hana Gašicová, won, 80-86.

It was the first victory for Teamsport Brno (1-3). On Sunday Teamsport Brno lost, 47-118, to Sokol Hradec Králové.

Ostrava also had a rough game against another Brno team: The northern Moravian team played at KP Brno (5-5) on Saturday and lost 97-58. Edita Šujanová led the balanced KP Brno offense with 16 points. Stephanie Madden had 10 points and nine rebounds.

Žabiny Brno (3-1) went to Slovanka MB on Wednesday to win, 60-66. Natálie Stoupalová led the team with 14 points. It was only a few days after they won games on three consecutive days in the European Women’s Basketball League. They had a bye over the weekend to rest up. Žabiny Brno now plays two home games, against Loko Trutnov tonight (Wednesday) at 6 p.m. and against U19 Chance on Saturday at 5 p.m.

The Brno Sports Report is published every Wednesday. All dates and times are subject to change. Most of the stories are about the traditional “English-speaking” team sports — football, hockey, baseball, basketball, American football, rugby, etc. — but it is also about the interesting local spectator and participation sports — tennis, badminton, running, horse racing, swimming, rock climbing, biking, etc. If you have any suggestions for what should be included, please comment below or send an email to brnosports@gmail.com.
