St. Martin’s Day is celebrated every November, and everybody can enjoy the first wine of the year and roasted goose with red cabbage and dumplings, the iconic tastes of St. Martin’s Day.

If you are wondering about the significance of St. Martin’s Day, according to folk tradition it is believed to be the time when snow begins to fall, not just in the mountains but also in the lowlands. In addition St. Martin is claimed to have originally been a Roman soldier, who later converted to Christianity, became a missionary and eventually a bishop.

The wine-tasting will take place in náměstí Svobody, with the ceremonial opening of the first bottles at 11:00 AM on the 11th of November, continuing as “Vin(n)osti svatého Martina” until the 15th of November (Sunday to Thursday).

The taste of the young wine is dry, light, fruity and fresh with a low alcohol content around 12%

As for why roast goose is eaten, legend has it that geese interrupted St. Martin while he was preaching, and he punished them on the roasting pan.
