Virunga, the organizer of the African fresh food market “Všechny chutě Afriky v Brně” [“All the tastes of Africa in Brno”], is a Czech-Ugandan food project which imports agricultural products from Africa and Asia. On Saturday, the market will be open for Brno’s foodies at Cafe Industra on Masná. Photos: Courtesy of Virunga. Photo credit: Courtesy of Virunga.

The Virunga project takes its name from the Virunga area of Uganda, an exotic volcanic zone with beautiful lakes, traditional tribes and wildlife. The Czech-Ugandan food project focuses on importing the freshest agricultural products from the heart of Africa and supporting Ugandan local farmers and producers. ‘‘Our products do not look like what you would find at the supermarket counter. They are natural, fragrant, mature and beautiful in their imperfection. Everything is absolutely fresh thanks to air transport. In doing so, we also think about the impact of our business,’’ said Linda and Petra. They went on to explain the goal of the project: “We support small communities in the less developed regions of Uganda. We help them to live better and to protect local nature.”

At “Všechny chutě Afriky v Brně”, visitors will have the chance to sample authentic exotic food and fresh fruit from Africa and Asia. Linda and Petra recommend Dragon fruit (red and white), Jackfruit, and Durian, the smelliest fruit in the world. Other delicious fruits that are less well-known include milk fruit, sapodilla, kiwano and longan. According to the organisers, visitors shouldn’t be worried about unusual new smells and tastes: ‘’Don’t be afraid of new tastes. Try jackfruit, for example, which can be eaten as a fruit or as ‘vegetarian meat’ in hamburgers, grilled bananas, pineapples, guacamole, smoothies, and pressed sugar cane.’’

Products on sale at the market will include fresh fruits, vegetables, spices, dried fruit, chocolate and handmade African products. Vendors will also prepare African dishes and drinks on site. “Try unknown fruit and explore the explosion of new tastes,” said Linda and Petra.

When and where: Saturday 24 November from 10AM till 6PM at Cafe Industra, Masná 9.
