Brno, Nov 26 (BD) – Following the recent municipal elections, the Brno City Government met on November 20 in the New Town Hall, in a meeting open to the public and also broadcast online, to decide the occupants of key political roles for the council term 2018-22. At the meeting, Markéta Vaňková of the Civic Democrats (ODS) was elected Mayor [“primátorka města Brna”] with 33 out of 55 votes. Most representatives from ANO voted against (only Jiří Faltýnek abstained), and SPD abstained, as reported in Brněnský Deník (“Brno má primátorku. Stala se jí Markéta Vaňková. The City Council will meet every Wednesday, with the next meeting to take place on November 28. In accordance with the four-party coalition agreement, the new City Council will consist of four representatives from ODS, three from KDU-ČSL, three Pirates, and one from ČSSD. The composition and priorities of the new coalition are described in more detail in our previous article: “Incoming Brno Government Signs Coalition Agreement; The New Government Will Meet For The First Time on 20 November”.

The City Council [“rada města Brna”] is the executive body of the City of Brno, and is formed by the Mayor, Deputy Mayors, and other councillors. The Council issues city regulations, manages the city according to an approved budget, and has the right to approve certain budgetary measures. The Council manages the activities of the committees and the Brno Municipality and allocates tasks.
