Brno, Nov 28 (BD) – In the second year of the participatory budgeting scheme, Brno citizens were choosing between 63 projects from 19 city districts. The City of Brno has allocated CZK 30 million to the scheme, and implementation of the winning projects will commence in 2019.
“At the very end, it was very interesting to follow the voting process, as over 3,000 people voted on the last day and the order of winning projects was changing every minute. I am delighted that the citizens of Brno are interested in participating in decision making within the framework of participatory budgeting,” said Tomáš Koláčný, Deputy Mayor for Participation.
The winning project with 2,341 votes, proposed by Zdeněk Herblich, focuses on the quality of water in the city, which could be improved both at the tap and in the water flowing back to nature from wastewater treatment plants. “New technological possibilities (such as in the currently untapped field of nanotechnology) need to be created, which would make it possible to remove still unresolved residues of drugs, hormones, pesticides, plastic microparticles, and nanoparticles,” writes Herblich in the project description. The project will result in a study including “very concrete steps of a technological nature and a conclusion comprehensible to ordinary citizens with non-professional education.” Nearly 3 million crowns will be allocated to the project.
The top four projects all received over 2000 votes.
