Brno, Nov 29 (BD) –Based on the 2009 novel by Simon Mawer, the film adaptation will feature high-profile stars such as: Carice van Houten, the Dutch actress who plays Melisandre (the Red Priestess) in the HBO hit series Game of Thrones; Sweden’s Hanna Alström, who played Princess Tilde in the Kingsman films; and Czech actor Karel Roden, who appeared in The Bourne Supremacy (2004).
“The Glass Room is an adaptation of Simon Mawer’s novel, which charts the history of Czechoslovakia in the 20th century, and tells the love stories of people who lived in Vila Tugendhat in various decades,” says Ševčík. The film tells a story of love, friendship and important life choices; its main heroines are Liesel Landauer and her girlfriend Hana, who were bound together in a lifelong relationship and to one extraordinary house that was built by the architect Von Abt for Liesel and her husband Viktor. “Everything that guides Hana and Liesel’s destinies relates somehow to the villa – the Glass Room – which in the fictional story of the film is the work of the visionary architect Von Abt,” explains producer Rudolf Biermann.
“When I first read the script, I was thrilled that the villa is actually one of the main characters of the story,” says actress Carice van Houten, commenting on her role: “The glass room is a metaphor for transparency, both in the stories that have taken place there over the years and in the emotions that accompanied them. There is nothing in the villa to hide. I liked that Hana was a very modern woman, which was very close to me.”
“Liesel is full of hope, but also a very strong and modern woman for her time, when we realize that the story begins sometime in the mid-1930s,” says actress Hanna Alström.
“The glass room is a miniature of a love story in the background of history,” adds the director Ševčík.
Julius Ševčík is known for his films Normal (2009), A Prominent Patient (2016), and a number of other award-winning films.
Mawer’s novel became an international bestseller, translated into dozens of languages and nominated for The Man Booker Prize, a prestigious literary award.
The City of Brno supported the production of this film with CZK 4.3 million of funding.
