On Tuesday, Plzensky Prazdroj Brewery reported a bulging in 5-litre Pilsner Urquell barrels with a consumption date of March 6, 2019 due to the presence of yeasts. The beer with this consumption date does not pose any health risk, but the brewery is now withdrawing the barrels from the market as they may burst. Photo credit: Plzensky Prazdroj.

Brno, Dec 14 (BD) – The warning concerns only small 5-litre Pilsner Urquell barrels, namely the L9 249 and L9 250 batches, with a consumption date of March 6, 2019. This information is on the top of the barrel (see the title photo).

The yeast got into the barrels during bottling from the air where it is normally present, due to a small technical defect. It is a species that is commonly used in food production and is no risk to human health, reported Jitka Němečková, spokeswoman for Plzensky Prazdroj.

The presence of the yeast may cause the barrels to break (due to deformation or breakage of the package). The yeast’s activity could lead to leakage or spraying of the beer from the barrel.

Consumers who have purchased this product are advised to contact the Plzeňský Prazdroj infoline, phone +420 222 710 159 or e-mail info@prazdroj.cz for information on how to proceed. The warning does not apply to any other batch of this product.
