Brno Sports Weekly Report — HC Kometa Starts Holiday Season Friday, Host Plzeň

Brno, Dec. 19 (BD) — egoé Basket Brno wins in Ostrava, Žabiny Brno continue winning and the Brno sports schedule.

HOCKEY

Kometa Have Four Games Left In 2018

HC Kometa returned to Tipsport extraliga play on Tuesday, promptly got behind and lost 6-4 at Chomutov.

Brno, which has lost three of four games in December, scored all four of its goals in the final 11 minutes. Peter Mueller scored twice.

With the victory, Chomutov moved out of last place in the league. In Tipsport extraliga play, Brno is in fifth place with 42 points, 13 behind league-leading Třinec.

Kometa has won only three times in a dozen games since the beginning of November. The team has four games during the holiday season: Plzeň on Friday at home; at Olomouc on Dec. 26; Ml. Boleslav on Dec. 28 at home; and at Pardubice on Dec. 30.

egoé Basket Brno Wins at Ostrava

Brno found its winning stride when they travelled to Ostrava, winning 75-81 to break a nine-league-game losing streak.

“It was a very tough week for us, especially after some lost games,” said Brno head coach Christianos Chougkaz. “Congratulations to my players.”

Brno plays at BK Armex Decin (8-6) tomorrow (Thursday). Earlier this season, Brno beat Decin to build a 3-1 record.

In Ostrava, Brno (4-10) jumped out to a lead at the beginning and maintained it throughout the game. At the end, DavellRoby kept the game under control by scoring 13 of Brno’s final 15 points duringthe final six minutes of the game. Roby, who averages 12 points, had 22 points.

Zdenek Nehyba had his best game of the season, scoring 16 points. He was a perfect 4-for-4 from 3-point range.

“Finally we started a game with good energy and very good concentration,” Chougkaz said. “It is always tough to play Ostrava. We were ready in our mind to play this game.”

Reggie Keely landed hard midway through the first quarter and limped off the court in visible pain. He played another few minutes, but his seven points and three rebounds were half of his normal contribution.

egoé Basket Brno and NH Ostrava (4-10) are at the bottom of the standings, just above Kingspan Královští sokoli (1-13), which got its only win against Brno two weeks ago.

egoé Basket Brno’s next home game is on Dec. 29 when they host Chougkaz’s former team, USK Praha.

WOMEN’SBASKETBALL

Žabiny Brno Third, KP Brno Fourth at Holiday Break

The ZBL reached its holiday break with ZVVZUSK Praha (12-0) still undefeated and BS DSK Basketball Nymburk KV (9-2) in second place. Then two of the Brno teams are in good positions: BK Žabiny Brno(8-3) are third and KP Brno (7-3) is fourth. Teamstore Brno (1-10) is 11^thand last.

Žabiny Brno flexed its muscles last week. The team won its CEWL game against UBI Graz, 92-49, on Wednesday; beat SBŠOstrava, 100-53, in league play on Saturday; then beat Ostrava again in the Czech Cup, 122-62, on Sunday.

American Marques Webb led the way in the weekend double-header against Ostrava, scoring 20 points in the first game and adding 22 points and 15 rebounds in the second.

Žabiny Brno hosts TTT Riga on Jan. 3 in anEWBL game. They start the 2019 league season at Sokol Hradec Kralové on Jan. 5.

KP Brno will resume play at home against DSK Basketball Nymburk on Jan. 5 at 3:30 p.m. It will be the first home-game appearance for the team since head coach Martin Pospíšil took over three weeks ago.

Teamstore Brno hosts BLK Slavia Praha on Jan. 6.
