Brno, Dec 20 (BD) – The story of baby Jesus being born in an empty stable has been depicted in all manner of different ways by numerous artists throughout history. Nativity scenes are an integral part of Christmas and can be found at nearly every Christmas market.

The Christmas Nativity Scene Exhibition has taken place at Christmas time in Brno for the last ten years. “Five years ago, we introduced more exhibitions in Slavkov and Nesovice – small cities outside of Brno,’’ said Petr Lukas, production manager of Letohrádek Mitrovských. This year the Mitrovský Summer Villa will be the home to wood-carved nativity scenes, as well as paper nativity scenes from East Bohemia, which for decades have been produced by members of the Halda family from the foothills of the Orlické Mountains. In addition to their own work, Haldas are also great collectors of nativity scenes, so visitors can admire exhibits from their private collection of world nativity scenes, from places such as Russia, Bolivia, Mexico, and some African states.

This year’s exhibition includes: a large nativity scene of the Třešť type (meaning that the scene is cut out of paper); a first Old-Brno paper nativity scene; a diorama about the Life of Christ; “Little Prince’s Planet”, a “glass fairy tale”; and professional advent and Christmas floristry.

The highlight of this year’s exhibition is an “all year long” nativity scene about the life of Jesus Christ that features 105 figures. It is the largest diorama on this theme in the Czech Republic. “The diorama story is narrated by a storyteller and is accompanied by music and lights,’’ explains Lukas. The diorama was created over two years between 2017-18 by its author Ivana Langrová. The figures are made out of wool.
