This week, Brno City Council selected “Nová Zbrojovka” as the new home for the curling tracks from the 2018 Brno Olympic Festival, over alternative proposals including Brno Exhibition Centre – Pavilion E, and Za Lužánkami. Visualization: STAREZ-SPORT.

Brno, Dec 21 (BD) – At a meeting on Wednesday, Brno City Council took another step towards the launch of fully-fledged curling tracks in Brno. The Council changed the decision of the city’s previous administration, choosing the New Zbrojovka area as the venue for the new ice rink, rather than the former Billa Supermarket on Drobného. The city company STAREZ-SPORT will now hold talks with curling clubs.

In September 2018, the previous City Council decided that the mobile ice tracks acquired for the 2018 Winter Olympics Festival at Brno Exhibition Center would be added as an extension to the ice rink at Lužánky. Three curling tracks were then to be installed in the former Billa Supermarket building on Drobného. “However, this option turned out to be complicated, as the building would have to obtain official approval for the new use. We have therefore been looking for other suitable locations, with the managing company, STAREZ-SPORT,” said Brno City Councilor Jaroslav Suchý.

The new location will enable almost year-round operation, and there will be no need for annual assembly and disassembly of the equipment, which will significantly reduce the operating costs and service life of the equipment.

Brno curlers are among the top in the country, and form the basis of a national team that has ambitions to participate in the Winter Olympics.
